- We have tested SolveIt! 4.2 as a DOS application with Microsoft Windows
- 3.0/3.1 and have found it to be fully compatible. We suggest that you use
- the PIF file that we have included on the SolveIt! disk.
-
- In order to us the Slvit4.Pif file, copy it to your C:\WINDOWS directory
- or wherever you have WINDOWS located. Start WINDOWS if it is not already
- started and click on the MAIN GROUP to open it if it is not already open.
- Double click on the PIF EDITOR to open it. Click on FILE, OPEN. Open the
- Slvit4.pif by double clicking on it. Edit PROGRAM FILENAME to include the
- directory that you installed SolveIt! into. If you used the suggested
- default directory, enter:
-
- C:\SLVIT42
-
- Also, optionally edit the START-UP DIRECTORY to tell WINDOWS where you
- want to save SolveIt! data files (Default: C:\SLVIT42).
-
- Click on FILE, SAVE to save your changes. Finally, click on FILE, EXIT.
- You have now edit the SLVIT4.PIF so that you can run SolveIt! under WINDOWS.
- This default PIF file will run SolveIt! in a resizable window.
-
- To run SolveIt!, from the PROGRAM MANAGER, click on FILE MANAGER. Select
- the C:\WINDOWS directory if it is not already the default directory. Scroll
- the right window until you find SLVIT4.PIF. Double click on SLVIT4.PIF and
- SolveIt! will start for you. (If this is the first time that you have run
- SolveIt!, you will be asked to enter your name and whether or not you see
- colors on your screen. After answering these questions, you will have to
- start SolveIt! again, in order for the changes to become effective.)
-
- If you don't want to have to click on SLVIT4.PIF everytime you want to
- start the program, you can set up an Icon. If there is a WINDOWS icon file
- on the SolveIt! disk copy this file to C:\WINDOWS. (If there is NOT a
- Slvit4.ico file, WINDOWS will create a default icon for you.) Open up
- PROGRAM MANAGER and click on FILE. At this point you can either create a new
- group for the SolveIt! icon or you can use an existing group. (To create a
- new group, click on the FILE MANAGER's FILE menu option. Click on NEW.
- Select PROGRAM GROUP, OK. Fill in the appropriate information. Click on OK.)
-
- Whether you make a new program group or decide to use an existing group,
- make the desired group active by clicking once on it. Click on the PROGRAM
- MANGER's FILE menu option, click on NEW. Click on PROGRAM ITEM, OK. Enter a
- description (suggestion: SolveIt! 4.2). Enter the command line (SLVIT4.PIF).
- Enter the working directory where SLVIT4.PIF is stored on your hard disk
- (default: C:\WINDOWS). Click on CHANGE ICON. You will get a message that
- says "No icons for specified file..." Click on OK. If you previously copied
- SLVIT4.ICO to your windows directory, you can edit the FILE NAME part of the
- entry to SLVIT4.ICO. Your entry will probably look like this:
-
- c:\windows\slvit4.ico
-
- Click on OK. Then click on OK one more time. You have now added a
- SolveIt! icon to a WINDOWS group.
-
- (If you do not have a SLVIT4.ICO, then skip the Change Icon step above.
- Windows will automatically make a default icon.)
-
- Now to run SolveIt!, simply double click on the new icon.
-

-
- We are very much interested in what you think of the Windows
- environment. Do you use it? All the of time or some of the time?
-
- We are looking into the possibility of making SolveIt! a Windows
- application. Would you like to see us do that? Considering that every
- company large or small has limited resources, would it be better for you if
- we developed the DOS version further (add features) or take the present
- version and work on updating it for Windows?
-
- Let us know what you think. And thank you.
