  3.    We have tested SolveIt! 4.2 as a DOS application with Microsoft Windows
  4. 3.0/3.1 and have found it to be fully compatible. We suggest that you use
  5. the PIF file that we have included on the SolveIt! disk.

  7.    In order to us the Slvit4.Pif file, copy it to your C:\WINDOWS directory
  8. or wherever you have WINDOWS located. Start WINDOWS if it is not already
  9. started and click on the MAIN GROUP to open it if it is not already open.
  10. Double click on the PIF EDITOR to open it. Click on FILE, OPEN. Open the
  11. Slvit4.pif by double clicking on it. Edit PROGRAM FILENAME to include the
  12. directory that you installed SolveIt! into. If you used the suggested
  13. default directory, enter:

  15. C:\SLVIT42

  17.    Also, optionally edit the START-UP DIRECTORY to tell WINDOWS where you
  18. want to save SolveIt! data files (Default: C:\SLVIT42).

  20.    Click on FILE, SAVE to save your changes. Finally, click on FILE, EXIT.
  21. You have now edit the SLVIT4.PIF so that you can run SolveIt! under WINDOWS.
  22. This default PIF file will run SolveIt! in a resizable window.

  24.    To run SolveIt!, from the PROGRAM MANAGER, click on FILE MANAGER. Select
  25. the C:\WINDOWS directory if it is not already the default directory. Scroll
  26. the right window until you find SLVIT4.PIF. Double click on SLVIT4.PIF and
  27. SolveIt! will start for you. (If this is the first time that you have run
  28. SolveIt!, you will be asked to enter your name and whether or not you see
  29. colors on your screen. After answering these questions, you will have to
  30. start SolveIt! again, in order for the changes to become effective.)

  32.    If you don't want to have to click on SLVIT4.PIF everytime you want to
  33. start the program, you can set up an Icon. If there is a WINDOWS icon file
  34. on the SolveIt! disk copy this file to C:\WINDOWS. (If there is NOT a
  35. Slvit4.ico file, WINDOWS will create a default icon for you.) Open up
  36. PROGRAM MANAGER and click on FILE. At this point you can either create a new
  37. group for the SolveIt! icon or you can use an existing group. (To create a
  38. new group, click on the FILE MANAGER's FILE menu option. Click on NEW.
  39. Select PROGRAM GROUP, OK. Fill in the appropriate information. Click on OK.)

  41.    Whether you make a new program group or decide to use an existing group,
  42. make the desired group active by clicking once on it. Click on the PROGRAM
  43. MANGER's FILE menu option, click on NEW. Click on PROGRAM ITEM, OK. Enter a
  44. description (suggestion: SolveIt! 4.2). Enter the command line (SLVIT4.PIF).
  45. Enter the working directory where SLVIT4.PIF is stored on your hard disk
  46. (default: C:\WINDOWS). Click on CHANGE ICON. You will get a message that
  47. says "No icons for specified file..." Click on OK. If you previously copied
  48. SLVIT4.ICO to your windows directory, you can edit the FILE NAME part of the
  49. entry to SLVIT4.ICO. Your entry will probably look like this:

  53.    Click on OK. Then click on OK one more time. You have now added a
  54. SolveIt! icon to a WINDOWS group.
  55.  
  56. (If you do not have a SLVIT4.ICO, then skip the Change Icon step above.
  57. Windows will automatically make a default icon.)

  59.    Now to run SolveIt!, simply double click on the new icon.

  63.      We are very much interested in what you think of the Windows
  64. environment. Do you use it? All the of time or some of the time?
  65.  
  66.      We are looking into the possibility of making SolveIt! a Windows
  67. application. Would you like to see us do that? Considering that every
  68. company large or small has limited resources, would it be better for you if
  69. we developed the DOS version further (add features) or take the present
  70. version and work on updating it for Windows?
